Historical Background & Significance
The 16th Light Cavalry is the senior-most regiment of the Indian Army Armoured Corps. Originally a horsed cavalry unit, the regiment transitioned away from horses and sabres in 1940 to fight with advanced tanks and armoured cars. They achieved notable operational success during World War II in Burma and later spearheaded critical advances in the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971.
