Core Highlights of the 1974 Exposition
  • Transition to a Decennial Tradition: While the sacred relics had been displayed at irregular intervals since the first official exposition in 1782, the 1974 event firmly established the regular decennial (once every ten years) schedule under post-liberation Goan administrative planning.
  • The Iconic Artwork Panels: The rector of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Fr. George D’Sa, commissioned Goan artist Dom Martin to create artwork for the event. Over a frantic three-day period right before the opening, Martin created eight highly praised original panels and drawings depicting different facets of the saint’s life. These panels adorned the base of the sacred casket during the exposition.
  • National Geographic Coverage: The visual impact of the 1974 exposition, along with Dom Martin’s striking decorative panels, was so profound that it was prominently featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine.
  • Commemorative Stamp: The Indian government and the Army Postal Service marked the occasion by issuing special First Day Covers (FDCs) and commemorative postage stamps featuring religious figures and symbols to celebrate the “Apostle of the Indies”.
