The PIN Code system—a six-digit numeric code—was originally introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, the then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications. It revolutionized mail sorting and delivery by eliminating confusion caused by identical place names, incorrect addresses, and a vast diversity of regional languages. 

According to the official launch materials from the Postage Stamps Government Portal, the stamp acknowledges how the PIN code system evolved from a basic mail management tool into a framework crucial for modern development. Today, it underpins digital banking operations, powers logistics, maps emergency health services, and drives geographical tracking systems across India’s network of over 1.59 lakh post offices.
