In 2016, the classification of “Near Threatened” (NT) bird species gained significant public attention through global conservation assessments and national awareness campaigns. According to the IUCN Red List criteria, these are species that do not currently qualify as “Threatened” (Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable) but are close to qualifying or likely to do so in the near future.
Notable 2016 Conservation Awareness (India Post Series)
On October 17, 2016, India Post released a commemorative “Series 1” of postage stamps specifically highlighting four Near Threatened bird species found in India to promote avian biodiversity conservation.
  • Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica): A small-island specialist found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is threatened by capture for the pet trade, habitat destruction, and predation by invasive mammals.
  • Nilgiri Flycatcher (Eumyias albicaudatus): Endemic to the Western Ghats of Southern India. It is listed as Near Threatened due to ongoing habitat destruction and its small, fragmented range.
  • Andaman Woodpecker (Dryocopus hodgei): Endemic to the Andaman Islands. While common in its habitat, it is threatened by rapid human population growth leading to logging and agricultural expansion.
  • Black-and-Orange Flycatcher (Ficedula nigrorufa): Another Western Ghats endemic that inhabits shola forests. It is monitored due to its restricted range and the threat of habitat degradation.
